What I’m reading: Careering, by Daisy Buchanan. I loved this book!
What I’m listening to: this podcast with Blindboy and Manchán Magan - featuring some interesting comparisons between Irish mythology and Australian Aboriginal mythology
What I’m eating: a tasting menu in Mas, Perth, ft. wagyu and wines by Vallée du Venom

I spent a couple of days in Los Angeles last week, visiting two of my cousins. It was kind of en route to Australia (?), plus the perfect excuse to visit family and eat some incredible food.
I’ve listed some of the best places I ate below and also marked them on a map which you can access here and save for your next trip to LA! This post is too long for the email because of all the photos, but you should be able to click the link at the end to see it in full.
Gjusta Bakery, Venice
I have been following this bakery for a while on Instagram, so I was dying to go when I got to LA. Really cute bakery, beautiful baked goods, the provisions store is also full of good things. My fave was the ham and raclette croissant (bottom right)

Reel Inn, Malibu
We went to the Reel Inn after a hike in Tuna Canyon, and it was perfect - tuna salad, oysters, fried shrimp
Bacio di Latte, Larchmont
Best gelato I’ve had in a long time - there’s a few locations too and very worth seeking out. Peanut butter crunch, three choc, hazelnut were all incredible. They also make these enormous and very tasty cookies which we obviously had to try

Hollywood Farmer’s Market
So much beautiful produce at this farmer’s market on Sundays in Hollywood - I was blown away by the tomatoes and the peaches! They also have food trucks and baked goods, so I recommend going for lunch

Quarter Sheets, Echo Park
Possibly my favourite place we ate in LA? Delicious pizza, but the main attraction were the desserts made by pastry chef Hannah Ziskin. Highly recommend

Salt and Straw, West Hollywood
Gorgeous ice-cream, interesting flavours. Salted, malted choc chip cookie and sea salt/caramel FTW
Maury’s Bagels, Silver Lake
A lovely New York-style bagel - I got Lox on everything bagel. Their coffee is also excellent
Bavel, Arts District
A really wonderful dining experience - excellent food, great service, wonderful cocktails. Everything was delicious, but most notably the octopus/calamari, prawns and desserts

Courage Bagels, Silver Lake
Believe the hype!! Montreal-style bagels, well worth queueing for. We had a Lox on Burnt Everything which was perfectly executed, and an almond butter/jam on sesame. Incredible

Magpies Softserve, Silver Lake
Very fun and fresh softserve, I recommend getting the swirl and adding at LEAST two toppings
Dune, Atwater Village
Mediterranean restaurant with wonderful fried chicken, pickles, hummus etc. etc.
Proof Bakery, Atwater Village
Just across the road from Dune, lovely pastries and coffee - I got the walnut/almond croissant
Dan Sung Sa, Koreatown
Great Korean food - try the wings and the beef bulgogi
Bumsan Milk Bar, Koreatown
Really interesting flavours, plus it’s in Koreatown so the perfect spot for dessert after Dan Sung Sa
Maru Coffee, Los Feliz
Excellent coffee - I recommend the cream top (even if you normally take your coffee black). Great Kouign Amann too

All Time, Los Feliz
Really friendly staff, a stunning breakfast sandwich on sourdough - plus lovely coffee and scones
Lodge Bread, Culver
Delicious sourdough pastries - try the bread though if you can, 10/10

In-N-Out, multiple locations
I had to try an In-N-Out burger while I was in LA - and it was good (especially with the “animal style sauce”). The chips were not, however
Erewhon, multiple locations
This place is ridiculously expensive (like $20 for a jar of jam expensive), but they do make a very good breakfast burrito
Mary is stuck in La for the night and day. I’m sure she told you all about it !
