What I’m reading: I just finished Tamar Adley’s An Everlasting Meal and loved it. It made me feel inspired and warm and joyful, and reminded me why I love cooking. Here’s a quote:

If we were taught to cook as we are taught to walk, encouraged first to feel for pebbles with our toes, then to wobble forward and fall, then had our hands firmly tugged on so we would try again, we would learn that being good at it relies on something deeply rooted, akin to walking, to get good at which we need only guidance, senses, and a little faith. We aren't often taught to cook like that, so when we watch people cook naturally, in what looks like an agreement between cook and cooked, we think that they were born with an ability to simply know that an egg is done, that the fish needs flipping, and that the soup needs salt. Instinct, whether on the ground or in the kitchen, is not a destination but a path.

What I’m listening to: the newest single from Bon Iver (recommended by my brother who has far better music taste than me), especially this song which SCREAMS spring/summer

What I’m eating: a very good dinner at the Back Lane Tavern in Woodstock (below) during a trip to Oxfordshire to visit my aunt and uncle.

Happy Good Friday! I hope that by now, you have made and eaten an abundance of HXB - but in case you haven’t, here’s a recipe for a much simpler, yet equally joyful Easter treat. These remind me of chocolate Rice Krispie buns, but I like to think that the cornflakes and chocolate ganache add a touch of class. The best part is that they don’t require any baking or special equipment, which is honestly one of my favourite kinds of recipes for my days off.

I’m always a little self-conscious posting recipes like this, as they’re so simple. The magic of recipes like this, though, is that they’re an easy win. It can’t all be hand-laminated pastries, ice-cream (which requires at least one piece of expensive equipment) and recipes with three separate components. Those recipes absolutely have a place, but this particular recipe is something that you can make start to finish in a matter of minutes, and is unlikely to provoke a baking-related meltdown. It’s hard to mess these up, because at the end of the day, you’ll end up with something involving cornflakes, chocolate and Mini Eggs - which is always going to be delicious. You could (and I think you should) make these with your children/nieces/nephews.
